    Whether you are an experienced Dahlia Horticulturalist or venturing into Dahlia's for the first time, the following information will help you search the vast array of varieties available.

    Selecting by colour and/or classification 

    Within the UK The National Dahlia Society issues a "Directory of Dahlia's" with classifications relating to flower and petal formation, these are further sub-divided according to flower style.

    There are 9 Dahlia formation classifications and each Dahlia variety within The Collection is identified by Catalogue No, Name, Formation, Colour and Flower Size.

     

    Cactus
    Cactus

    Cactus dahlias have fully double blooms, the ray florets are usually pointed, the majority narrow and resolute for 50% or more of their length (longitudinal axis) and either straight or incurving.

    Collerette
    Collerette

    Collerette dahlias have blooms with a single outer ring of generally flat ray florets, which may overlap, with a ring of small florets (The Collar) the centre forming a disc.

    Decorative
    Decorative

    Decorative dahlias have fully double blooms with no disc. The ray florets may vary in form and the tips may be either pointed or rounded. This group contains the largest blooms ( Giants ) of all the dahlias which may be over 10 inches in diameter

    Dwarf
    Dwarf

    Dwarf dahlias are those suitable for growing at the front of the border and in pots, growing up to 60cm in height.

    Pompon
    Pompon

    Pompon dahlias have fully double spherical blooms of miniature size, with florets largely involute along their length (longitudinal axis).

    Semi Cactus
    Semi Cactus

    Semi-Cactus dahlias have fully double blooms; the ray florets are usually pointed and revolute for more than 25% of their length and broad at the base and either straight or incurving. GIANT - Flower size over 254 mm/10 inches diameter.

    Waterlilly
    Waterlilly

    Waterlily dahlias have fully double blooms characterised by broad and generally sparse fay florets, which are straight or slightly involute along their length giving the flower a shallow appearance. The depth should be less than half the diameter of the bloom.

    Miscellaneous
    Miscellaneous

    Any dahlias which do not fall into the other groups are included here such as single orchid, double orchid, anemone types.

    Colours

    Dahlia's range from the palest pinks through to the chocolate box reds, firey oranges to purple and foliage from green to dark bronze.

    1. Is in classification order (i.e Ball, Cactus etc..) and within each classification varieties are listed in flower size. (i.e. minature, small, giant etc..) 
    2. Details the name, number, classification, colour, flower size (where applicable) and foliage colour (if dark).
