Definitely one of the curios of the dahlia world 'York and Lancaster' produces all white flowers, all red or a random mixture of both red and white petals. Because of this colour variation it's known as a chimeric type.
You will often hear them referred to as varieties with "jumping genes". Most living things have two sets of chromosomes, dahlias are octoploids which means they have eight. You never know what the next flower will look like! Whilst they are of great garden interest you will not see them on the show bench because individual flowers are rarely the same colours.
NDC breeder Mark Twyning bred 'Twynings Smartie' from this fascinating dahlia.
